Melissa - Ideally, only guests who will be invited to the wedding would be invited to the shower, and since you're getting married far away and having only a small affair, a shower may be awkward. If, however, if is a small shower with close friends and family members it can still be appropriate. The key is to not go overboard, which could make the shower seem like a play to get extra gifts without inviting people to the actual festivities. A small party to celebrate your upcoming wedding in a fun way should still be suitable, however. Best wishes!

What is the etiquette if your getting married in mexico but only having a small wedding. My mom would like to have a shower but I don't plan on inviting a lot of people to the wedding due to the costs for them to travel. Is it ok to have a shower even though I won't be getting married or having the reception in town?

The author of this article means that gifts should not be removed from their packaging or used until after the wedding. They must be opened at the shower.

In what circle is it considered "bad luck" to open shower gifts before a wedding? They should be opened at the shower and a thank-you note should be sent immediately following the shower.
