Angela - Hiring a wedding planner is one way to have someone available to help you, but if your budget isn't big enough for that, you can also consider asking friends and family for help in planning and putting together your special day. If someone is a good baker, they may be able to make the cake or cupcakes for you, and someone who can arrange flowers can help with bouquets and centerpieces. These are just a couple ideas; I'm sure you have many people who'd be willing to help! Best wishes!

I would need help for my wedding.

Julie - That's a great perspective about the day of coordinator serving as the "personal assistant" for the bride, and it would certainly make the day less stressful. Thanks for sharing!

A bride I worked with recently hired me as her day of coordinator. We spent a few hours getting me up to speed and the next day she got married. Her only comment to me before we said goodnight was, "Why didn't I hire you a year ago?" Professional planners can help you save time, money and aggravation. Why NOT hire a wedding planner? You hired a florist, a photographer, a caterer and many others. Why deprive yourself of a personal assistant on one of the biggest days of your life?

Hi Nesrin,

Many wedding planners today actually offer affordable rates. Have an idea of the type of wedding you'd like and you may be able to get rates from different consultants. Some charge by the hour, some a flat fee, and some a percentage of the total wedding costs, so keep that in consideration when asking for rates. You may also work with the consultant and handle some aspects yourself rather than handing over every detail. Good luck!

Hi Maureen,

A good rule of thumb is that the party that extended the invitation pays. When consultants invite clients out, they often pay for the meal or the first round of drinks.

If it was a mutual decision, each each party should pay their own bill.

We have hired wedding planners for our event in November 2008. When we meet with our planners say at a restaurant or for drinks, who pays for the bill???

Donna - You'll need to contact local planners and inquire about their service rates. Prices generally vary based on the size of the wedding, how fast plans need to be made, the overall budget you're spending, where it will be held, and other details. A quick consultation with local planners can give you a good idea about their rates.

What is the going rate for a wedding planner in New Jersey?

Rebecca - To find a local planner, you can contact other vendors (bridal shops, caterers, etc.) for recommendations, or check in the yellow pages. When you meet with potential planners, be sure they know your budget and are willing to work with it, and ask to see a portfolio of weddings they've helped arrange so you can judge their style against what you hope to have for your wedding.

Its not going to be a very large ceremony, maybe 100 ppl attending. I need help finding and booking a venue, caterer, and the reception. This is my first marrige, i know i am starting a little late but we want to be married outside in the summer. If i can find someone local that would be great. I dont know what steps to take to get started.

Michelle - See the response below. Costs vary tremendously depending on your type of wedding, location, and other factors. You can always try to find a planner willing to work on a consultation basis to give you some help without doing all the work, which should lower costs. Best wishes!

Hello my name is Michelle Williamson and I will be getting married on 8/29/2009 and I would like to hire a wedding planner. I would like to know some price ranges and of course money is limited. This will be my first marriage and hopefully my last so I am not sure of what steps to follow. I want this to be the best day of my life and I don't want to forget anything so assistance from a professional is a must.

Stephanie - The cost of planners depends on a lot of different factors, such as where you are, the size of the wedding, and what types of arrangements you would like your planner to assist with. Your best bet is to research locally and find someone who can help you out with their experience in your area -- if you are planning a destination wedding, you can research planners in that specific area to help you find available wedding locations.

I need help finding a location for our wedding on August 8, 2008. I do not have tons of time and of course money is of the utmost concern. I would be curious to find out the cost for a planner to help me when time is tough for me as well as making decisions on the right location.
