Tammy - You can "officially" announce your engagement once you've "officially" become engaged -- ring, wedding date, etc. In some situations couples will announce an engagement without having yet set a date, but knowing the bare bones of your nuptial plans will be useful when people begin to ask after seeing an annoucement. To be tactful, I'd suggest waiting at least several weeks or months, but it depends on your wedding plans and how the two of you agree on best handling the news.

My fiance and I have been dating for almost a year and have been unofficially engaged. His divorce was finalized (finally!!) How long until we announce our engagement? We don't want to be inappropriate. Thanks in advance!

Linda - Some newspapers do print engagement announcements, and they are generally worded differently than wedding announcments. It's perfectly appropriate, and a phrase such as "a summer 2009 wedding is planned" can indicate a general idea of the wedding date so people aren't always asking. If the wedding will take place within the next 8 months or so, however, an engagement announcement is fairly redundant and newspaper announcements should be saved for the wedding itself. If, as you say, it is more than a year away, an engagement announcement is perfectly fine. Best wishes!

is it appropriate to have a newspaper announcement soon after the engagement even though the wedding will not be until next year?
