Wedding Dresses Suitable for a Beach Wedding
From LoveToKnow Weddings
You've chosen the sunny location, and now it's time to focus on wedding dresses suitable for a beach wedding. Taking into account the weather and your own personal style preferences, you'll find that there are plenty of dresses to appeal to your fashionable side.
Finding Your Style
Unless you've shopping for a wedding dress before, you likely aren't quite sure where to begin when it comes to searching for your dress. You know the one: You've dreamed about it for years, you've even contemplated that it might look like something from your childhood's wildest fantasies. Yet when it comes down to actually beginning the process, it seems suddenly and frightfully daunting when there are so many dresses to choose from.
The first step is to determine your wedding dress style. Are you more in line with dramatic, glamorous looks that would turn heads on a red carpet, or is your taste more casual and relaxed? If you're planning a beach wedding, the latter style is perfect – but if your tastes happen to run the more refined route, you'll still find options galore. Once you've narrowed down the type of dress you're interested in, you can start to focus on choosing the right one for a beach wedding.
Wedding Dresses Suitable for a Beach Wedding
If there's only one word to describe a beach wedding, perhaps it's easy. There's just something relaxed and charming about the entire affair, from the beautiful weather and backdrop to the color palettes and tendency for guests to go barefoot. The mood is breezy and cool, and this may well best be reflected by your wedding dress.
The key to finding the right wedding dress for the beach is to focus on the material: Forgo rich, thick fabrics in favor of lightweight materials that skim the body, like silk, organza, and linen. The last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable or even remotely constricted. Other traits of wedding dresses suitable for a beach wedding include:
- Flowing silhouettes that seem to simply glide over your figure. Sheath and A-line cuts are outstanding choices, but don't shy away from long gown styles if that's your ultimate preference.
- Colors that resonate with the season. If you're having a spring or summer wedding on the beach, consider a dress with an accent color in light blue, pink, yellow, green, lavender, or gold, either by way of a sash or some light embroidery. If you love jewel tones, consider incorporating them in the same way; a diminutive accent will really pop!
- Necklines can contribute to the overall beach-appropriate appearance of your dress. Look for halter and off-the-shoulder styles; both will keep you cool, too.
At the same time, there are a couple of details you should probably avoid for a beach wedding, too. Among them:
- Long trains and veils, both of which will blow about in the breeze and possibly collect sand as you move.
- Heavy details, such as beads and sequins. A small amount is acceptable, but any more and you risk dealing with a heavier-than-necessary dress. Remember that the key is to feel light.
- Heavy, restrictive fabrics that will seem stiff in the beach breeze. Heavier fabrics may also be too hot to be comfortable on the beach.
Things to Consider
In addition to the style of the dress itself, you'll also need to keep a few other points in mind when selecting an appropriate beach wedding dress.
- What time is the wedding going to be held? If your wedding is later in the day, you may feel a bit chillier than you would otherwise (bear in mind that it will be slightly windy to begin with, as it typically is near the ocean). Consider wearing a light bolero jacket or pashmina wrap if the weather calls for it.
- Would you like to choose something you can wear more than once? Many women opt for slightly informal, casual beach wedding dresses that offer more bang for their buck. Since it's not uncommon to wear white or ivory dresses during the summer or for special occasions, it's entirely possible that a beach wedding dress could easily be worn more than once.
The Most Important Detail
Forget the rest: At the end of the day, the most important detail of all is fit. If your dress is not comfortable, doesn't flatter your figure, and won’t make you feel like a million bucks on one of the most important days of your life, it's not the dress for you. Keep searching until you find the one that is not only beach-appropriate, but also you-appropriate!
