Wedding Card Verses
From LoveToKnow Weddings
Looking for a card with just the right wedding card verses is difficult but worth the extra time in the card stores. After all, the better the printed verse, the less you have to struggle with what to write in a wedding card as a personal message. While a great verse is no excuse to skip the personal note, it does make your own words easier to come by and cut down on your writing efforts.
Pre-Printed Card Verses
Cards in the wedding section of your local stationary shop, card dealer, or drugstore/discount store usually have pre-printed verses appropriate for the occasion. You can find these cards with verses and graphics in a variety of styles:
- Humorous: Verses in humorous cards often highlight the hilarious aspects of being newlyweds or the wedding day itself. They may refer to the "ball and chain" or other stereotypical ideas related to weddings. Choose this card for friends who enjoy joking around and do not take themselves too seriously.
- Sentimental: Sentimental card verses are often romantic in nature, frequently touching upon love, the future, and shared commitments to one another. This type of card is abundant, and varies widely from one another, with some simply saying a few lines of heartfelt congrats to others with long poems regarding love and marriage.
- Relative: The verses in these cards usually refer to the bride or groom personally, with lines like "to my sister and her new husband" or "for my father and his bride on their wedding day."
- Famous Quotations: A number of wedding cards will include famous quotations on love from poets like Elizabeth Barrett Browning or Shakespeare. These quotes may be direct in the card verse or the main idea may be the theme in the stanzas.
Take your time and read each wedding card verse carefully. You want it to reflect your best wedding wishes for the couple. Remember to tie in your personal message and thoughts to the pre-printed verse in the card.
Write Your Own Wedding Card Verses
Sometimes, even when you start looking for a wedding card right after receiving the wedding invitation, you cannot find one with just the right verse. Rather than settling on a card that doesn't accurately reflect your thoughts, try coming up with your own words to write in wedding cards.
The verses you write do not have to follow any "rules." However, a few short lines or sentences are typical for a verse in a card. Ask yourself these questions to get started:
- Do I want my verse to rhyme? If so, write down some words related to love, weddings, marriage, and newlyweds for use in couplets.
- Should I write a particular kind of poem or verse? Write original verses in haiku format or even as a funny limerick, depending on the tone you are seeking.
- Can I break my sentences into lines? Even if you are not a poet, you can still write a sentence that flows. Say it aloud several times to see where you naturally pause when speaking; this helps you figure out where to break lines.
To make your personally written wedding card verses look authentic, center them in the middle of the right half of the inside of the card, or the lower half for a top folded card. Break them up into lines, usually between two and ten. Sometimes the lines can begin on the front of the card and then continue on the inside.
Write the verses in a different colored ink and style of writing than your usual handwriting. For example, handwrite the verse using calligraphy techniques or slanted block lettering instead of your normal cursive. If you are using a computer, change the fonts and sizes. This way, you can write your own words of congratulations for a wedding below your original verse without having the newlywed couple get confused over which is the verse and which is the message.
Brides and grooms will read the wedding card verse you chose, so make sure it conveys the right message. Some couples even keep their cards in a wedding scrapbook to look at on their anniversaries. Once you have made the all-important choice of the right wedding card and verse, remember to attached it to the wedding gift securely so they are not accidentally separated.
Writing your own wedding card verses, or choosing the best cards to purchase, does not have to be a challenge. Think carefully about the couple and the wishes you want to convey for their special day, and the verse will be just right.
