Tuxedo Formal Wear
From LoveToKnow Weddings
The right tuxedo formal wear is essential. There are so many factors to consider before purchasing your tux. In fact, there's more to choosing the right tuxedo than walking into a shop and picking the one that fits best. The type of tuxedo formal wear you choose depends on many factors.
Tuxedo Formal Wear Considerations
- Time of day – Did you know that you shouldn't wear the same type of tuxedo for a morning event than one at night? Day time weddings mean more casual tuxedos while night time dictates formality.
- Type of event – Formal or casual, it makes a difference.
- Modern or classic? Would you like a long, five button suit jacket or a classic dinner jacket? There are many options for each.
Types of Tuxedo Formal Wear
- Cutaway – A long coat generally worn for formal morning weddings and events.
- Stroller – Also a long jacket for formal day time weddings and events.
- Suit Jacket – For informal weddings. A dark, preferably black, suit jacket is fine for casual affairs.
- Dinner Jacket – Standard white coat tuxedo formal wear. Jacket is regular length with no bells and whistles.
Choosing Tuxedo Formal Wear
If your town is like most, there are several men's formal wear rental shops in the area. You'll want to choose the one with the best reputation. While cost is definitely a factor, you want to be sure to look your best on your wedding day. The best way to learn about formal wear shops is by word of mouth. Talk to friends, especially those who have recently married, and ask for recommendations. You can also check with wedding planners, caterers, florists and other wedding professionals. They all network together, and all are sure to have suggestions. It might also be a good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau to be sure there's no funny business going on.
The formal wear shop should have a tailor on staff. You don't want any off the rack or one size fits all deals because your tux should fit as if it's made for you. This means you, your groomsmen and the fathers of both bride and groom should shop together at least 4 to 6 weeks before the event. By shopping together you ensure matching tuxedos while also leaves plenty of time for alterations.
Choose a style and material that are most comfortable. You should have enough room to move freely. Remember, you'll be wearing your tuxedo for most of the day. Be sure the style and fit appeals to you, especially if you plan on dancing a lot.
If you'll be wearing a vest, coordinate colors with the bride. Many grooms choose a "serious" solid colored vest or cumberbund for the wedding ceremony and change into a more whimsical, colorful vest for the reception afterwards.
Even though you tried on the tux when you first visited the shop, be sure to try it on again before taking it home. You want to ensure a good fit so there are no surprises. If something doesn't fit properly, the tailor will have to fix it then and there. Inspect the tuxedo for damage and stains, if you don't point them out before taking it home you may have to pay for repairs.
If you're not sure which tuxedo is right for your event, talk with the shop owner. He'll ask questions and point out the styles that work best for the event and your body type.
