Toddler Flower Girl Dresses

From LoveToKnow Weddings

Because most couples choose flower girls who are between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old, getting toddler flower girl dresses are an important part of the wedding planning process.

Options for Toddler Flower Girl Dresses

Selecting a flower girl dress can be a fun task. While you want the girls to be adorable, you also want them to be comfortable. Consider the following things when selecting a dress:

  • Fabric: Is it comfortable? Anything that itches or scratches will make your girls squirm.
  • Style: Does the dress look nice with the bridesmaid gowns? Check to find matching sashes or bodices.
  • Length: Because young children grow extremely fast, consider getting the dress an inch or two longer than you pictured. This will eliminate the problem of a growth spurt between ordering and the actual wedding.

You should also consider the walking skills of your flower girls. Some young toddlers walk extremely well and would have no problem with a long or full skirt. Others are still a bit wary of their new legs, so consider shorter dresses where they may be able to see their feet.

Another option for toddler flower girl dresses is to get a similar style to an older girl’s dress. You could order the flower girl dress in a complimentary style as a junior bridesmaid’s dress, with sleeves instead of straps.

Having an outdoor or themed wedding may make you want to add a few frills to your toddler flower girl dresses. Frequently, fairy or angel wings are added to the youngest child(ren)’s dresses for a fantasy look. Ballerina or dresses with tutus are popular variations for a themed wedding.

Dress Color

Having a toddler flower girl dress usually limits you to white or shades of white. If the bride’s dress is off-white, choose a flower girl dress in off-white. To make sure the shades match, consider choosing the same designer as the wedding dress.

Having the dress colors match the bridal party and bride is a look many brides try to achieve. If their bridal dress has crystals on the bodice or a chiffon skirt, they may want to look for a dress with the same design.

To pump a bit of color into the flower girl dress, add a sash in the same material and color as the bridesmaid dresses. An accent color (used in flowers and décor) in a sash or on the bodice would also serve to tie the flower girl dresses into the bridal party.

Non-Traditional Dresses

If you are open to trying something different, consider using non-traditional toddler flower girl dresses. Having the girls were something unique will really stand out as they walk down the aisle. Several ideas can be incorporated into their dresses to make them unique.

Have a simple dress made out of white/off-white material and add scraps from the bridesmaid alterations to trim the bottom of the flower girl dresses. Or pick up a retail store dress in all white and do the same.

Are the flower girls coming from out of town? Pick out a dress from the children’s section of an online retailer or department store. Let the mothers of the girls pick up the dress themselves, to be sure it fits. This allows you to put a little pattern into the flower girl dresses. Choose a floral pattern dress for spring or summer wedding, or a velvet dress with sparkles for a winter wedding.

If the toddlers in your wedding are still in diapers, you may need to consider covering them. Having cartoon characters peek out from the bottom of a short dress will look awkward. Extremely short summer dresses for toddlers would look cute with a ruffled diaper cover peeking out from beneath.

Paying for Dresses

Now that the dress has been selected, who should pay? As part of the responsibility for being in the bridal party, members are expected to pay for their own attire. While you may be able to find a bridesmaid dress that can be worn again, rarely do toddler flower girl dresses fit long enough for that to be an option. Consider offering to pay for at least half of the dress if it is pricey.

Another option to help cut costs on the parents of your flower girls (especially if more than one family member is involved in the bridal party) is to help pay for the girls’ accessories. If the parents pay for the dress, you could purchase the necklace, gloves, headpiece, tights, and shoes for the flower girls.

If the girls you have chosen to be flower girls are 10, 12, and 13 years old, they're really a bit too old to be flower girls, and having them wear diapers and such to be "cute" is relatively demeaning to them. At that age, they can better be junior bridesmaids and still be a part of the bridal party. If, however, you meant they are 10, 12, and 13 months old, it's unlikely anyone will really ask about what they're wearing in that way, since it is age appropriate and coordinated to the wedding. After all, no one asks the bridesmaids why they're wearing identical dresses -- if anyone does ask, however, you can simply say it was a prettier, more fun option than just diapers.
