Same Sex Wedding Ceremonies
From LoveToKnow Weddings
When planning a same sex wedding ceremony, gay couples can face a few additional considerations. With changing legislation, several states, including Hawaii, Vermont and Massachusetts now allow same sex couples to marry with same benefits and rights as heterosexual couples.
Domestic partnerships and civil unions offer some benefits similar to marriage. Domestic partners may receive health coverage under their spouse, rights to stepparent adoption, death benefits and in certain instances, estate administration. Civil unions can also offer some of the same benefits as marriage including access to medical records, property transfer, and testimonial unity in the event of legal proceedings against one’s spouse.
A same sex wedding ceremony does not necessarily create the same legal relationship in every state. While domestic partnerships and civil unions can provide some means of protection, it is important to note that the partnership may not be recognized across state lines. The terms domestic partnership and civil union mean different things in different states.
Therefore, it is very important for same sex couples to carefully research the legislation concerning same sex wedding ceremonies in the state in which they want to be married.
Planning Same Sex Wedding Ceremonies
Planning a same sex wedding ceremony can be fraught with as much tension and difficulty as any other wedding. However, in addition to juggling budget, the demands of family and your everyday life, you may face discrimination from wedding vendors and institutions during the wedding planning process.
The first step is for the couple to decide what type of same sex wedding ceremony they would like to have. The beliefs of both partners are an important factor to take into consideration. Should the ceremony have religious overtones or more of a universal feel? Do you want to incorporate a few religious elements into the ceremony? These are issues that should be carefully discussed between partners.
Once you decide what type of same sex wedding ceremony is going to take place, you can begin to research the appropriate vendors and venues for your affair. It may be a good idea to compile a list of vendors and wedding sites that have already had experience in dealing with same sex wedding ceremonies. If you are not sure whether a venue is “gay friendly” it is best to ask up front to avoid unpleasant surprises. You have the right to have your wedding wherever you want, but the amount of hassle and discrimination you want to deal with, is something that you should discuss with your partner.
What is a Commitment Ceremony?
A commitment ceremony is just what it implies. For same sex couples, it involves one individual making a long-term commitment to another. Aside from the legalities of a same sex wedding ceremony, a commitment ceremony can be a beautiful expression of love and affection between couples.
The basic components of commitment ceremony include a greeting from the officiate of the ceremony to the guests, the statement of vows, the exchange of rings and an official pronouncement of marriage from the facilitator.
Remember the Basics of Wedding Planning
When all is said and done, the same basic rules apply to planning a same sex wedding ceremony as to any other wedding. Create a reasonable budget, research several vendors in each category, stick to your timeline and be sure to enlist the help of willing friends and family in the planning process.
