Ring Bearer Tux
From LoveToKnow Weddings
Choosing a ring bearer tux for your young man to wear during the wedding can be fun instead of a chore if you keep a few simple tips in mind.
Getting the Best Fitting Ring Bearer Tux
As all brides know, wedding dresses (and often bridesmaids dresses as well) have to be ordered months in advance of the wedding. Because the dresses are usually made to allow for alterations, a size change up or down can usually be accommodated.
However, you want to get the ring bearer’s attire as close to the wedding as possible. Children grow very quickly; even if the child has been in the same size for six months, he could have a growth spurt at any time. Furthermore, children can have additional sizing issues based on their growth, such as having long legs and arms but being extremely lean.
Babies and toddlers look best in a lightweight tux, even in the cooler months. Layers of heavy shirts, cummerbunds/vests, tie, and jacket can look fussy and be uncomfortable for little ones. Alternatively, you may look for shirts with a built-in half vest and clip on tie.
Older ringer bearers (ages 4 to 10) can often wear a full tuxedo, with tails if that will match the wedding party. Tuxedo shops often offer several groomsman styles in a children’s size. Have the ring bearer measured between four and two weeks before the wedding to ensure the best fit, and consider asking him to wear a dress shirt and tie several times before the wedding so he is used to the feel of formalwear.
Alternatives to Traditional Tuxes
While a traditional black or white tuxedo for your ring bearer is great for a traditional wedding, you may want something more unique. Just because the tux is not black or white does not mean your little guy cannot look fabulous on the big day. The key is for him to match the overall mood and tone of the entire event.
Destination beach wedding attire tends to be more casual. Consider putting your ring bearer in a short-pants tuxedo. Light blue, greens, and sandy beiges make excellent colors for a beach ring bearer tuxedo. A seersucker suit would also look very appropriate.
Couples who choose outdoor locations may want to have their young man in a more casual suit instead of a tuxedo. Plaid pants with a plain jacket would fit right into an outdoor wedding on a golf course; while a motorcycle-themed wedding may want the tuxedo vest to be leather.
If the bridal party colors can be found in a small tuxedos, you may choose to do so. Consider putting the child in a navy blue, hunter green, or even burgundy tuxedo.
Shopping for the Tuxedo
As the bride and groom, perhaps you want your ring bearer to match the entire wedding party. Let the parents know where to purchase or rent the tuxedo from, and inform the salesclerks at that store which style you choose.
Other couples may choose to let the parents pick out the tuxedo, in the hopes that it could be used again. Give them guidelines to shop with, including:
- Color (black, navy, white, etc.)
- Tails or no tails
- Vest color
- Single or double breasted jacket
- Type of tie
Let the parents know you would like to see the tux before they cut the tags off, to be sure it fits into the look of the wedding party. If you are hesitant about letting the parents choose the tux, suggest that you go shopping together. This way, a mutually agreeable tux can be found with little fuss.
Ring bearer tuxes can be found just about anywhere. If your ring bearer is old enough to rent it, this is probably the most affordable option. However, if the parents want a suit for their young man anyway, or you need an infant or toddler tux, you can find a number of stores that cater to your needs. Check out the following tux options at these retailers:
Local department stores, bridal salons, children’s formalwear shops, and consignment stores are excellent places to begin your search for the ring bearer tuxedo. Whatever style you choose, your little man is sure to melt hearts as he marches down the aisle on your wedding day.
