Ring Bearer Pillow

From LoveToKnow Weddings

Although a bride's thoughts may be more focused on her wedding dress than a ring bearer pillow, this accessory is an important part of the ceremony.

History of the Ring Bearer Pillow

Also known as a wedding ring cushion, the ring bearer pillow has long been a wedding custom in many cultures. Its function is primarily symbolic. Since the wedding rings are of vital importance, not only usually made of costly precious metals, but also symbolizing the love and commitment of the impending marriage, they are usually entrusted to the best man until the appropriate time during the ceremony.

Since the rings do symbolize the important commitment about to take place, it seems only natural that they are highlighted during the ceremony. The ring bearer or page boy is usually a young child who walks down the aisle carrying a white satin pillow onto which two false rings are displayed. In some cases, couples choose to use the actual rings, in which case they may be secured onto the pillow using thread.

Types of Pillows

Like nearly all wedding accessories, there is a wide variety of choices when it comes to choosing a ring bearer pillow.

Colors

Although the traditional pillow is white, today's modern brides have other color choices as well. Contemporary black and white patterns, rich reds, shimmering purples, lovely pastels, subtle ivories, creams, and beiges -- even stark blacks are available for wedding ring pillows.

Embellishments

A simple satin ring bearer pillow can be a stunning and adequate accessory for your wedding ceremony, but the majority of these cushions come with embellishments and rich décor. A sampling of the embellishments you may find include:

  • Corner tassels
  • Satin or velvet ribbons or bows
  • Lace or appliqués
  • Beads or pearls
  • Sequins or crystals
  • Center accent buttons
  • Silk rosettes
  • Taffeta encasing
  • Silk screened images
  • Silken cord

Shapes

The majority of ring bearer pillows are designed in a square shape, but you can also find other shapes as well. Heart-shaped and circular pillows are other popular choices.

Monogramming

For couples interested in truly personalizing their wedding, monogrammed pillows are available. You can choose to have your initials, names, a special saying, the wedding date, or another symbol, such as L for love or M for marriage, monogrammed on the cushion. Not all companies selling ring pillows offer this service, and you may be charged an additional fee from those that do.

Specialty Pillows

If a standard ring cushion doesn't suit your style, you can also find a ring bearer pillow of the specialty variety. You may decide to have a pillow that reflects the theme of your wedding, the season in which it takes place, the atmosphere or style of the wedding, or merely something that reflects the personalities of you and your soon-to-be spouse. Some examples of specialty cushions are:

  • Snowflakes
  • Faux fur
  • Autumn leaves
  • Floral decorations
  • Crosses or other religious emblems
  • Western boots or spurs
  • Celtic love knots
  • Shells, sand-dollars, or other beach themes
  • Informal felt pillows
  • Victorian décor

Dog's Ring Bearer Cushions

If a bride or a groom has a pet who feels like part of the family, s/he may choose to have the dog or cat act as the ring-bearer. This is especially true for informal or outdoor weddings. If you'd like to honor your dog with walking down the aisle, rest assured you'll be able to find a ring bearer pillow for little fluffy or Buster as well, as a variety of companies, such as Bridal People, offer pet ring pillows.

Dog's or pet's ring bearer cushions are often smaller than standard pillows and come with a harness or strap that can be affixed to your pet with Velcro or some other means.

Costs and Shopping

Like most wedding accessories, you'll find a broad price range. You'll find prices anywhere from $5 for a simple cushion to $100 or more for a custom made or more elaborate pillow. Most bridal, craft, and card and gift stores carry ring bearer cushions.
