Elegant Reception Decorations

Wedding Reception Decoration Tips

Virtually any space can be transformed into an area appropriate for hosting a celebration for guests after a wedding, given it has enough space to accommodate the number of people. From a casual backyard luau to a formal reception hall dinner, the aesthetic appeal of your reception venue can truly transform the atmosphere. Whether you are looking for festive and fun or classic and traditional decorations, your reception decor doesn't need to be elaborate or expensive, either. Well-placed and well-coordinated decorations can go a long way in achieving the look you desire, whether it's elegance or whimsy.

When looking at photos of wedding reception decorations and planning your own decor scheme, keep in mind the following aspects:

  • Your Color Scheme: There are many ways you can utilize color in your decor, from picking up on the bridesmaids' dress colors in the table centerpieces to colored lights.
  • Your Theme and Atmosphere: A Wedding's theme can be communicated in various ways as well, such as a Two Peas in a Pod wedding theme accentuated with green decor. The intensity and choice of colors and styles of decorations will affect the atmosphere.
  • The Venue: Familiarize yourself with the limitations of your wedding reception venue in advance, so you can be aware of what you will need to decorate.
  • Pre-Reception Time Limitations: Elaborate decor may be time consuming to create; make sure you'll have the time and personnel available to make your desired transformations.
  • Lighting: Lighting is an often overlooked part of the decor. A dramatic lighted back drop or other lighting ideas can make easy work of decorating.

What to Decorate

Although there are many areas you can decorate for a wedding, keep in mind that less is more. Choosing to balance decorated areas with undecorated space can create a nice harmony for your venue. You may choose to highlight the tables, for example, using large centerpieces, and leave the wall and entry way decor more minimal. Alternately, you may decide to have exotic room decor such as themed statues or ice sculptures and leave the tables more simply adorned.

Areas and things you can consider using wedding reception decorations on include:

  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Buffet Table
  • Cake Table
  • Guest Sign-in Table
  • Gift/ Card Table
  • Entry Ways
  • Wall Space
  • Room Space
  • Seating Areas
  • Gazebos or Pavilions for Outdoor Weddings

Jeanette - There may be some decorations you've already purchased that you can move to your home for nice touches, and here are some additional ideas:

- Remove a lot of "clutter" from your downstairs, including delicate, valuable, or breakable objects. Put them in a room upstairs, preferably that you can lock to be safe. Also remove some small, unnecessary pieces of furniture to open up floor space.
- Use covers for your furniture that coordinate with wedding colors. This will help prevent stains and will make all your furniture instantly match. In a pinch, you can use white sheets decorated with colored bows on the arms or around the backs of chairs.
- Use your bouquet and your bridesmaids' flowers for decorations around the downstairs area with matching vases.
- Put some nice pictures of you and your fiance in coordinating frames to create a montage of your relationship on a mantle, table, or shelves.
- Be sure to have trash cans readily available but discreetly positioned so guests can help clean up after themselves.
- Display favors in one place, like in a large decorative bowl or on a table, to use them as part of your decorations.
- Drape tulle swags around tables, on hanging lights (carefully to avoid fire hazards), and in doorways for a coordinating "bridal" touch.
- Be sure the bathroom downstairs (if available) is clean, eliminate clutter from the room, put out fresh soap, and add cute "his and hers" towels for a whimsical touch.
- Opt for simple and inexpensive tea lights or votive candles that can be scattered around the downstairs for romantic lighting.
- Use rose petals for decorative accents -- these can be scattered on tables, shelves, around the edge of a dance area, on windowsills, etc., but be sure they're deliberately placed and don't just look tossed around.

As you can see, there are plenty of things you can do quickly and easily - just don't stress over it, and you're sure to have a great event that will be all the more memorable because it is at home. Best wishes!

Hello, I am getting married in two weeks! My fiance' proposed to me almost a year and a half ago. Our pastor just told us one week ago that we could not dance at the fellowship hall. I have already bought all of the decorations for the fellowship hall and planned on having our reception there. In light of that we still are going through with the reception there but, we are having the "main" reception at our house now. I have spent all of the money on decorations already. I don't have any more to spend for our downstairs of our house. We are having a buffet and our d.j. is setting up the music at our home now instead of the fellowship hall. Can you please give me some advice on how to decorate my downsatairs for a reception? I really wished my pastor would of said something a long time ago about the music and dancing, it would of saved us a lot of money, time, and hard feelings. Thank you very much, Jeanette.
