One of a Kind Wedding Cake
From LoveToKnow Weddings
Today’s brides and grooms are finding ever more inventive ways to personalize their weddings, and there is no tastier option than a one-of-a-kind wedding cake. From unique designs to outrageous flavors, there are many ways to turn this classic confection into a dazzling treat.
Ideas for One-of-a-Kind Wedding Cakes
The classic three-tiered white cake with buttercream icing is so common at weddings that it has become cliché. Today’s couples, however, have many different options for creating incredibly unique cakes to celebrate their nuptials with sweet sensationalism.
Size
A three- or four-tiered cake is common at most weddings, so the first way couples can make their cake stand out is by its size. A seven-tiered cake is not only stupendous, but also symbolic of good luck for the couple, while an even larger cake could symbolize the length of time the couple has been together or could include a different layer for every member of the bridal party.
To make larger cakes, many bakers are willing to fashion bottom tiers out of cardboard with decorative icing, and only the top layers of the cake are edible. Another option is to generously space a smaller number of layers with longer columns or specialized wedding cake stands designed for greater height.
Flavor
Vanilla cakes are the most popular wedding flavor, with marble, chocolate, carrot, and red velvet options also among the top choices. A couple can easily create a unique cake by opting for more unique flavors, such as:
- Candy-centered cakes that incorporate candy bars, cookies, or other crumbled treats into the batter.
- Liqueur-flavored cakes or fillings. Kahlua, rum, and grand mariner are popular choices.
- Fresh fruit or jelly fillings that complement the cake layers. Raspberry and strawberry are frequent choices, so a more unique cake might use blackberry, blueberry, or tangerine.
- Unusual sponge cake flavors such as strawberry, cinnamon spice, mocha, orange, or white chocolate.
- Flavored icings instead of the traditional vanilla or chocolate icing. Mint, fruit, and liqueur flavors are all more unusual choices.
Another option to create a one-of-a-kind wedding cake is for each layer to be a different flavor. Not only does this make the cake more personalized, but it also gives guests greater choices to enjoy the decadent treat.
Decorations
Standard wedding cake decorations include icing swirls, roses, pearls, beads, or fresh flowers to match the wedding bouquet. More unique cakes use unusual decorative accents, such as:
- Monograms, names, dates, or icing poetry adorning the cake’s surface.
- Edible flowers, possibly crystallized in sugar.
- Marzipan or fondant figures and themed items, such as seashells for a beach wedding.
- An interior chocolate fountain that is both tasty and beautiful.
- Airbrushed color gradients instead of one solid color.
- Photos either framed or recreated in icing.
- Icing lace in a pattern that matches the wedding theme or venue.
- Dramatic black and white wedding cake
Shape
The very shape of a wedding cake can make it one-of-a-kind. Round cakes are the most common and therefore the most predictable, while square wedding cakes are also growing in popularity. Heart shapes, stars, hexagons, ovals, rectangles, and triangles are all more unique options for a stunning cake. With care, wedding cakes can even be made into the shapes of initials, hollow circles, or themed items (shells, Christmas trees, etc.) for the ultimate in personalization. Some cakes are even completely crazy shapes, with each layer being different and angled to create an unbalanced yet charming design.
Display
The wedding cake is more than just a dessert, it is a showpiece of the wedding reception. How the cake is displayed can make it more memorable and unique, even if the cake itself is still a classic, simple design.
- Arrange satellite cakes around the larger centerpiece cake to increase the illusion of size and add variety to the cake table.
- Place the wedding cake topper on a lower tier or on the table nearby instead of on the top tier.
- Arrange the bridesmaids’ bouquets as accents to the cake table during the reception.
- Arrange the tiers asymmetrically instead of centered on one another. A cascade effect, for example, is elegant without being predictable.
- Create a balloon or floral garland arch over the cake table to give it even more significance.
Even More Unique Cakes
Despite all the different variations of one-of-a-kind wedding cakes, some couples prefer to really go into unexplored territory with completely unique confections. A Krispy Kreme wedding cake, for example, uses donuts instead of sponge cake as a central treat, and a similar motif can be fashioned with Twinkies or other snack cakes. Cupcake wedding cakes are another variation, or the couple could opt for other treats such as chocolate truffles, dipped strawberries, or individual tropical tarts arranged in tiers instead of the traditional cake.
To keep a cake but create a one-of-a-kind design, couples may incorporate their wedding theme into the cake. A Caribbean beach wedding, for example, might have a designer waterfall wedding cake as its signature treat. A Las Vegas wedding might use a cake shaped like one of the famous Strip hotels or the Mirage volcano, while a winter wedding cake might be best accented with a stunning snowflake motif.
Problems With One-of-a-Kind Cakes
Unique cakes may be delightful to behold, but there are problems with these unusual designs. Wedding cake prices are higher for one-of-a-kind wedding cakes because they take longer to design and assemble. Many bakers will be unwilling or unable to create extremely unusual designs because of the labor and risk involved, and the couple also runs the risk of their guests not sharing the same personalized vision as the bride and groom. In that case, the unusual cake could be distracting or disdained rather than enjoyed.
One-of-a-kind wedding cakes are a fun, delicious way for couples to inject their personalities into the wedding festivities. With hundreds of variations possible, it can be easy to create a cake as unique as the couple it celebrates.
