October Wedding Bouquet
From LoveToKnow Weddings
When planning your October wedding bouquet, think rich colors that celebrate the autumn season. Reds, rusts, oranges, deep pinks, dark purples, yellows, and creamy beiges are prime choices. October bouquet choices are all about the earth tones.
Perfect Flowers for an October Wedding Bouquet
The color and flower combinations for October wedding bouquets are nearly endless, but here are a few that keep popping up time and time again in those autumn floral arrangements:
- Chrysanthemums: Available in a wide array of colors, these flowers are also hard to pin down when it comes to form, too. They can resemble daisies or pompoms.
- Roses: These are some of the most well known flowers and they come in colors from pale pink to chocolate brown.
- Hydrangea: These grow in flowerheads, which look like many small flowers in a clump at the end of a stem. They are usually white, but can be blue, red, pink, or purple.
- Gladiola: These have several beautiful flowers on one stalk. Colors include pink, reddish, and purple with white markings. Additionally, there are white and cream with red and orange markings.
- Freesia: These are fragrant flowers with the shape of a funnel. They're available year-round in white, cream, yellow, lavender, purple, orange, and pink.
- Delphinium/Larkspur: These are tall and dotted with small flowers. Color options include scarlet, white, lavender, blue, indigo, and violet.
Berries and Grasses
Don't underestimate the earthy beauty of adding berries and grasses to your bouquet for an original touch. Look for plants with pods to add texture and visual interest to the bouquet. Consider montbretia/Crocosmia, which almost looks like freesia, but develops those aforementioned pods when mature. Another option is — believe it or not — St. John's Wort, or hypericum. According to the Flower Shop Network, you can find hypericum in raisin brown, yellow, green, red, orange, and salmon pink.
As far as grasses are concerned, you can add wheat or rye for even more (or alternative) texture. In lieu of the grasses, you could just opt for leaves in the beautifully rich fall colors. You could frame your flowers with a veil of their own, made up of foliage in shades of red, orange, yellow, and sometimes even brown.
An additional option to include in your October wedding bouquet are cinnamon sticks.
Popular Autumn Wedding Colors
Autumn weddings tend to feature rich, deep colors. Here are some you may want to consider incorporating into your bouquet:
- Red
- Burgundy
- Rust
- Orange
- Goldenrod
- Yellow
- Deep pink
- Dark purple
- Creamy beige
The contrast against the green leaves will be stunning no matter which combination you choose. You could go with an innocent, small bouquet of cream-colored roses, for example, or go all out with many different shades of chrysanthemums.
Working with Your Dress
We won't say that simple dresses require simple bouquets and elaborate dresses need elaborate bouquets to complete the image — or vice-versa. Only you can decide the type of bouquet you want to carry, and maybe even design. We can, however, give you tips for complementing your dress.
If your dress is ivory (beautiful for October weddings!), a bouquet of cream-colored flowers may blend right in, especially in pictures. Even if you're considering a bouquet of neutral-toned flowers to match your dress, consider adding a few colored petals to liven it up and make your bouquet pop on film.
Does your dress have accent colors in traditional October colors like red, burgundy, or even royal purple? If so, consider flowers that match or are complementary in color to bring out those accents. You could choose to add a few violet or indigo delphiniums to your bouquet if your dress has a deep violet panel sweeping down the back, for example.
Other Bouquet Tips
If you're the sentimental type, consider making your own bouquet (or having one made) of silk flowers. If your home décor mirrors your wedding color choices, you'll have an instant accent for your living room or foyer. You can keep those flowers forever and even put them on display as a reminder of the most romantic day of your life.
Make a smaller bouquet that looks like your wedding bouquet if you plan to be tossing one at your reception. The luckiest single gal at your wedding will have a keepsake that way.
Don't forget that it's almost always cheaper to go with flowers of the season, so if at all possible, try to incorporate as many autumn flowers into your October ceremony as you can!
