I Need To Tell You Something, Try Not To Be Upset!
From LoveToKnow Weddings
My father stood outside the church nursery waiting for me as I donned my wedding gown and all the accoutrements. The bridesmaids and my mother had left before me and were heading up the hall to the church foyer to await the beginning of the ceremony.
As I came out of the nursery Daddy linked his arm through mine, offering a bit more support than I thought necessary. Then he uttered the words no one in their right mind wants to hear, much less a bride less than five minutes before her wedding is to begin! He said,"Honey, I have something to tell you, but I don't want you to get upset." We were walking up the hall towards the foyer and I began to feel weak, having no idea what it was he needed to impart. He tightened his grip on me after feeling me sag a little, but remained silent for what seemed an eternity.
That eternity was, to date, the longest five seconds of my life, during which my mind conjured up two possibilities for his reticence. My first thought was that the sanctuary was full to overflowing and Daddy feared I'd be nervous. My second and more plausible consideration was that few people had been able to come because of the bitter cold January night and the perilous snow-covered roads.
Finally Daddy broke his silence and explained, "Jim's Daddy lost your ring." (Jim's Daddy was the Best Man, also my future father-in-law. 'My Ring' was the size five wedding band that Jim would soon be placing on my ring finger. At least that was the plan!) Imagine another pregnant pause, Daddy revelled in the dramatic. Finally he added, "And your Mother found it!"
We had made it to the foyer by now. I could hear the pre-wedding music playing. Guests were settled in, the mothers had been seated and candles were being lit. Our wedding director was opening the doors to the sanctuary in preparation for our walk down the aisle as Daddy began explaining.
Jim's Dad had put my small gold wedding band on his pinkie finger, where it rested around the first joint. He thought it a suitable place til he would hand it over to his son during the ceremony. Unfortunately the ring slipped off of his finger and a search was begun. By the grace of God my mother found it outside the nursery... in the hallway... on her way to the foyer to await the beginning of the ceremony!
Daddy's intuition had been right, I was going to be upset! And even the worst I could think of was nothing compared to the drama that played out behind the scenes. We made it down the aisle on time and my wedding band made it to my finger at the appropriate time. All's well that ends well!
