Honeymoon Registry

From LoveToKnow Weddings

You’ve no doubt heard of wedding gift registries, computerized databases in which the Happy Couple put their wedding gift wish list. This is a practice that has worked well with many couples and eliminates the need to return or closet gifts that won’t be used. What about the bride and groom who have everything? What do they register for? The answer is simple, they register for their honeymoon.

Honeymoon gifts can help pay for the getaway.

What is a Honeymoon Registry?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. A honeymoon registry allows wedding guests to help defray the cost of a honeymoon. Since many couples have lived on their own for quite a while nowadays, they have every thing they need. With a honeymoon registry, their guests are offered the option of helping them with their honeymoon in lieu of a gift. While guests are certainly under no obligation to give from a honeymoon registry, it's a nice change from kitchen appliances and chafing dishes.

How Does it Work?

It’s really quite simple. The Happy Couple registers at one of many honeymoon registry sites. From there they can choose the items and events they would like. For instance, round trip plane fair for both might be $800 round trip. They can register for their flight to be paid for in eight increments of $100. Guest can purchase as many or as little increments as they like. Whatever is leftover at honeymoon time is paid for by the bride and groom.

Once a couple registers, the registry will provide them with a certain amount of postcards listing their gift requests. These postcards can be mailed to wedding guests.

The Gifts

Airfare isn’t the only gift in the honeymoon registry. Gift givers can also help share in the cost of travel insurance, hotel accommodations, meals at local restaurants, car rentals, tourist attractions, even digital cameras and clothing for the trip. The Happy Couple doesn’t only have to travel by plane, either. Honeymoon regestries include all aspects of travel including rental cars and cruise ships.

Gifts of theater tickets and rock concerts are also available, as are gifts of various activities such as windsurfing, jet skiing and bicycle riding. Tuxes and gowns can even be rented for a formal night out! These may not be traditional wedding gifts, but times are changing and there’s nothing wrong with keeping up with the latest trends.

Why Not?

If you’re not sure of what to get for the couple who has everything, why not help give the gift of a really wonderful honeymoon? You’re not only giving the bride and groom their dream vacation, you’re giving them some wonderful memories as well. It’s much better than giving them something that’s going to be returned or stuck up in an attic for eternity.

Laurie - If they have already booked the honeymoon, ideally they should be able to pay for it. A honeymoon themed shower is a great idea, however, to get them small things they'll be able to enjoy on the cruise, but it's in poor taste to ask guests to donate money without a specialized registry for this type of event. Contact the travel agent they've used for information on whether one can be set up.

Hi, My sister already booked and paid for her honeymoon. Her & her husband will be going on a cruise. They already booked there airfare, cruise and an excursion that they didnt want to miss. We are planning a honeymoon themed bridal shower. They have been living in there home for a year & a half already - so there is no need for the normal shower gifts. What they really need is money to pay for the honeymoon ... lol. I am not sure what to do.

The registry company may provide small cards to enclose in shower invitations, or you can put the website information in the invitation (include an access code or registration number if guests will need one to see the registry). If they are simply registered for gifts to use on the honeymoon -- snorkels for a cruise, for example -- you can mention the registry like any other gift registry. Please Note: While it is okay to put registry information in a shower invitation, it is generally considered poor etiquette to include registry information in the wedding invitation or wedding announcements.
