Honeymoon Ideas

From LoveToKnow Weddings

The sky is the limit as far as honeymoon ideas go. There is a plethora of options available. So many, in fact, that it can take almost as much planning as the wedding itself! With so many honeymoon ideas out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. This shouldn’t be a time of stress, however. Planning your honeymoon should be enjoyable. How do you decide where to go?

When planning a honeymoon, there are several considerations:

  • How much time you have
  • When you go
  • Mode of transportation
  • Your budget
  • Personal preferences

Preliminary Considerations

Before discussing exactly where you want to go, you need to consider how much time you have for a honeymoon. For example, many honeymoon ideas are great, but some aren’t practical for the couple who only has time for a weekend getaway. Plan your romantic vacation according to how much time you have for it, whether it’s two days, two weeks or two months.

The time of year can also affect your honeymooning plans. Some places might be easier to get to because they’re less busy (and therefore less booked) in certain times of the year than others. Do your research. This is a no-brainer, but you’ll need to take into account how you’ll be getting there. If you can’t afford plane tickets or are plane-a-phobic, and you live in the U.S., embarking on a European tour probably isn’t your best bet. If you want to drive but you only have a few days, taking a road trip across Canada isn’t going to work, either.

Probably one of the biggest factors to take into consideration is budget. How much you can actually afford to spend on your honeymoon will determine whether you go camping in the wilderness for four days or fly off to an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean for 12 days.

Types of Honeymoons

What types of honeymoon ideas are there? Basically, a honeymoon is anything you want it to be. It doesn’t have to be a big, exciting trip to Greece, although it certainly can be. Honeymoons come in all shapes and sizes.

For example, you might consider hot, exotic destinations or camping and fishing close to home. Another idea is to drive to a city, stay in a hotel and visit tourist attractions. Other options are a European tour, a secluded beach and an all-inclusive cruise. You might even try a let’s-see-where-this-takes-us road trip, a quiet, luxury resort, mountain-climbing, sky-diving or scuba diving. As you can see, the possibilities are endless!

Favorite Honeymoon Ideas

If you need some help, Modern Bride online has a brand-new “The World’s 50 Best Honeymoons” list for 2005, organized into categories, such as overall excellence, affordability, romance, adventure, beaches and culture. If you’ve got some time and cash to burn, consider one of Sandals’ all inclusive resorts. Sandals boasts 12 romantic couples-only resorts on the exotic beaches of the Caribbean, in Antigua, St. Lucia, Jamaica and The Bahamas. These resorts offer many watersports, such as scuba diving, waterskiing and windsurfing, and land sports, such as golf, as well as fine dining and European spas.

Other honeymoon ideas include:

  • Hawaii, one of Modern Bride’s top choices, where you can take in beautiful beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes and luaus, and try your hand at surfing Hawaii Travel Guide
  • Florida, also popular, and many couples enjoy Walt Disney World as part of their honeymoon
  • Banff (in Alberta, Canada), which boasts spectacular scenery complete with mountains, lakes, forests, as well as their famous hot springs and fantastic winter skiing
  • Western Europe- explore a favorite country or take a Western European tour to get a taste of many cultures
  • Las Vegas, if you love the nightlife
  • Niagara Falls (either in New York or Ontario, Canada), and embrace a simply stunning—not to mention romantic—natural wonder

As overwhelming as it may be to try and find the “perfect honeymoon”—just remember to choose something that makes sense for both of you, and that you both will enjoy and cherish forever.
