Choosing Your Wedding Vows

A wedding vow is an oath or a promise of the commitment you are making to your new spouse. While traditional wedding vows include things like "to love, honor and cherish," your vow can incorporate anything you want to tell your beloved. For example, many modern brides no longer promise to "obey" their husbands, since many feel this detracts from partnership in marriage. Many couples use their vows to avow their love as well as make promises for the future. Others tell stories about falling in love with each other or what made them decide to share their lives.

While many couples use biblical passages in their vows, others choose poetry, famous quotes, traditional vows or write their own heartfelt messages. Some couples choose to say the same things to one another, while other brides and grooms choose to speak individual messages. Traditional Vow 1

Variations of this traditional vow are the most common in modern wedding ceremonies:

I (Bride/Groom), take you (Groom/Bride), to be my (wife/husband), to have and to hold from this day onward, for better and for worse, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, honor and to cherish, until death do us part.

Religious Wedding Vow 1

In the presence of God and our friends and family I take thee to be my husband/wife. I promise to be your faithful partner in life, respecting you, loving you and sharing with you as intended by God and our shared faith.

Religious Wedding Vow 2

In Christ's name, I offer myself to you in marriage. I promise to share my life and love with you, honoring the covenant of our union and making our home a place of faith.

Non-traditional Vow 1

(Bride/Groom), you are my best friend. I love you with all my heart and stand here before all of our friends and family, sharing the happiest day of my life. I want nothing more than to share my future with you – my triumphs and my challenges, my joys and my sorrows. Together, I know we can accomplish the life we both dream of living.

Non-traditional Vow 2

Before my life was joined with yours, I was incomplete. Before I loved you, everything was dark. Now that our lives are joined, I am full in love, in laughter and in light. You are my everything and I give all I have to you, that you may have all you want and need.
