Fountain Wedding Cake
From LoveToKnow Weddings
Fountain wedding cakes are elegant, beautiful, and a perfect way to showcase the cake as a primary focal point of the reception.
About the Wedding Cake Fountain
There are as many different types of fountain wedding cakes as there are brides. The cake itself, like other wedding cakes, is designed with the specifications, detail, colors, and/or flowers of the wedding, so each cake is unique. The cake is typically designed onto some type of tiered platforms as to accommodate a mini three-tiered cascading fountain underneath, usually under a highly-placed first cake tier.
Typical arrangements include:
- Standard vertical tiers
- A main tier with tiers flanking each side
- Stairway or spiral cake arrangements
- Stacked cakes on tiers
- One-tier stacked cakes
Fountains on the Cake
Two other alternatives are used in place of the fountain underneath the first tier of the wedding cake. One of these options is placed the fountain on top of the very first layer of the cake itself. This layer is often on the table rather than upheld with a tier, then additional tiers are stacked above.
A less-commonly used option is the fountain in place of a wedding cake topper. Although beautiful, there is more concern with this arrangement should the water drip onto the cake itself.
The Chocolate Fountain Wedding Cake
About the Fountain
Another contemporary option that is unique and creative is using a chocolate fountain as the wedding cake itself. Although not a cake in the usual sense, a flowing chocolate fountain with its high tiers can be a spectacular alternative to traditional wedding cakes.
A chocolate fountain wedding cake can be ordered with white, dark, semi-sweet, milk, or colored chocolate. The chocolate is actually a chocolate or chocolate fondue that is cascading down the tiered fountain. It is interactive, interesting, and definitely not your ordinary wedding cake.
Dipping Items
The chocolate fountain wedding cake is typically surrounded by an assortment of fruit and other delectable treats that guests can dip in the chocolate, such as:
- Fresh fruit
- Dried fruit
- Pretzels
- Mini donuts or donut holes
- Nuts
- Marshmallows
- Graham crackers
- Mint sticks
- Toffee
- Caramels
- Biscotti
- Mini brownies
- Mini cookies
- Peanut brittle
- Pound cake
- Angel food cake
- Wafer cookies
- Rice crispy treats
Renting the Fountain
Since the chocolate fountain used for a wedding is typically much larger than a standard fondue fountain, and will only be used once, the wedding couple typically rents the fountain rather than buying it.
The rental cost is usually for a specified number of hours, usually two to three, with the option to add on additional hours if needed. Couples may wish to use the fountain for both appetizers and dessert, or they may wish to have it solely for their "cake." Rental may include delivery to the reception site, dipping skewers, table presentation, set-up and tear down from a professional attendant, and the chocolate itself. Costs range depending on the size and services included, but usually range from $200 to $500.
Keep in mind to that not every company offering chocolate fountain wedding cakes is the same. Considerations you may want to check into before placing your rental order include:
- Quality of the chocolate
- Experience of the chocolatier
- Professionalism of the attendants
- Number of people a fountain package accommodates
Toppers
Using a chocolate fountain wedding cake doesn't mean you can't have a cake topper. Some companies offer fountain toppers for an additional charge. These are specialty toppers and based that work with the fountain. These may include holiday themes, fruits, or even personalized nameplates with the bride and groom's names.
