How will your dress get to its destination?

If you’re planning a destination wedding there are a number of items you’ll need to concern yourself with. Of course, cost is an issue, as are the legalities of getting married in another state or country. There’s also something you may not have considered, your destination wedding dress.

Can the Destination Wedding Dress Travel?

“Of course I’m going to wear a wedding dress,” you might be thinking, as you should. Before you run out and buy a destination wedding dress however, you’ll want to think about how it will get to its intended destination. You may choose a different dress for getting married abroad than the dress you might have envisioned for a traditional wedding. Will you be sending it ahead of time? If so, you’ll have to find a box big enough for it to fit without it getting crushed. You’ll also have to have your final alterations early so as to leave enough time for your package to arrive. Keep in mind, there’s always a chance the dress can be lost in transit.

You can carry the dress with you as you fly, but it will be hard to fit a big, poufy wedding dress in the overhead compartment. It’s best not to check your wedding dress with the rest of the luggage because luggage sometimes has a way of parting company with its owner and you can’t afford for this to happen. Your best bet is to make arrangements with the airline ahead of time to hang your dress in the flight attendants cabin.

Rental

If it doesn’t matter to you if you own a wedding dress, you might consider a rental. Many locations famous for destination weddings, such as Las Vegas, offer this option. Your wedding planner or a travel] agent specializing in destination weddings should have information regarding destination wedding dress rentals for you.

If you’re having a beach wedding it shouldn’t be difficult to travel with your wedding dress. Beach wedding dresses are more informal making for easier travel. In many cases, a beach wedding dress will be fine carried in a suit bag.

At the Hotel

You’ll want to unpack your destination wedding dress as soon as you enter your hotel room. Take it out of its packing and hang it up so all of the wrinkles will fall out. If the dress has deep wrinkles, call to the front desk for a steamer or iron. If they have a professional on the premises, you’ll want to let him handle it.

Keep your wedding dress hung up in an area free of traffic until it’s time to wear it. On the day of your wedding, it’ll look fresh and smooth and no one will know it traveled so far.

I like your article on gown rental since that is what we do here in the Smoky Mountains. Would you consider adding this area "The Wedding Capitol of the South" to your destination lists? Just do a search on smoky mountain wedding.
