Deer Grooms Cake
From LoveToKnow Weddings
A deer grooms cake has become a popular choice for many weddings and it can be a great way to honor the groom’s hunting prowess.
The Manly Dessert
Just as women dream of the perfect wedding cake for their reception, men sometimes envision a sweet treat at the nuptials as well. However, in contrast to visions of fondant flowers and flawless swirls of frosting, men tend to err more on the side of humor and personalized cakes.
A groom’s cake has long been a tradition to honor the male in a process that is usually dominated by the female tradition and imagination. They used to be simple chocolate cakes, usually in a square shape, but today they are made in all shapes and sizes – the crazier the better.
Grooms cakes are found at rehearsal dinners, bachelor parties, and even at the wedding reception. They usually represent something macho and manly, with the theme of the cake often taken from one of the groom’s cherished pastimes. A deer or hunting themed cake is the perfect choice for an avid hunter or perhaps a nature lover.
The Many Forms of Wedding Deer
There are quite a few ways a deer may show up on the wedding dessert table. Some grooms cakes are simply sheet cakes with deer painted onto them, either with frosting or with the newest technology of photo transfer onto the top of a cake using rice paper. If you are especially fortunate, a friend of your fiancé may even use the photo transfer technique to display a picture of your hunter honey with his slaughtered game on the cake.
Miniature deer may also stand atop hills or in meadows of green frosting, and – most popularly – the cake may be molded into the shape of a deer itself. You will commonly see these deer shaped cakes featuring only the head of a deer, much like what would hang inside the cabin wall of a ski lodge.
If your groom has his heart set on an actual deer head cake, it may be best to save it for the bachelor party – as chances are, some of your guests may be turned off to the idea of eating a cake that has just finished staring at them from a platter.
How to Make a Deer Cake
If you are a bride to be full of unconditional love, or a friend of a groom looking to make a deer cake for your engaged buddy, it isn’t outlandishly difficult to do.
3-D Deer Cake for a Groom
Around Easter, lamb cake pans are available for purchase at craft stores. If it isn’t anywhere near spring time, you can order the pan online through a chef site.Once you have the lamb cake pan, you will be able to make a 3D deer.
- Bake the lamb cake according to the instructions that comes with the pan, and then frost in a dark brown to create the deer fur.
- Add antlers with fondant or foil.
- If you choose to use foil, cover those with a white or ivory tinted frosting so that the silver from the foil is completely covered.
- Use the remaining white or ivory frosting to make eyes, creating pupils with a bit of black icing.
- Use the black icing to add hooves to the feet.
Simple Deer Cake
You can also make a 2D deer head cake by baking a small round cake and adding two triangles for the ears. The antlers can be done out of fondant or even white pipe cleaners. For an added twist, consider using a red velvet cake for the inside.
Rice Crispy Deer Mount Cake
For a really neat twist on the groom's cake, check out the deer mount cake on FamilyFun.com. This creative cake actually used rise crispy treats instead of a standard cake to create the mounted deer.
Consult other friends and family members of the groom to gather some great ideas on how to make the cake, or check specialty stores for deer cake kits.
Where to Buy a Deer Grooms Cake
If you aren’t the domestic type, you can always purchase a deer grooms cake. The easiest way to do this is to call your local specialty bakery and ask if they will make one. Many wedding bakeries will either know how to do this or will be up to the challenge. However, you will have to go to an authentic wedding bakery, as opposed to a bakery that merely sells wedding cakes. For example, many grocery store bakeries now carry a small selection of wedding cakes, however capturing wildlife in frosting is not their forte. Even small bakeries, however, may be able to craft a simple deer scene if that is the cake design you are interested in.
Deer grooms cakes are sure to make the day of a husband-to-be who loves to hunt wild game, or just wants the macho look of a deer head in his honor. While brides may find this tradition to be beyond understanding, many couples today are embracing it and finding innovative ways to immortalize Bambi’s rugged buttercream cousin.
