While the bride most likely has the best of intentions, flower girl dresses are expensive, for some they’re not even affordable. There are several ways to save money, however, and no one will be the wiser.
Matching the Bridesmaids
In many cases, the flower girl’s dress must match that of the bridesmaids. It must be taken from the same dye lot of material so the colors match exactly. The flower girl’s dress is a younger version of the more grownup bridesmaids’ dresses. The problem is, they cost quite a deal of money. There are a couple of ways to get around this, but it all depends on how cooperative the manufacturer or dress shop owners are.
Since you’ll be shopping for your little girl’s dress at the same time the bridesmaids are shopping, you’ll probably all go to the same store. If this is the case, tell the shopkeeper you’re looking for a cheap flower girl dress. See if an inexpensive dress is available using the same dye lot as the bridesmaids’ dresses. If the manufacturer of the bridesmaids’ dresses has several styles of “little girl” dresses available this most likely won’t be an issue. If the shopkeeper is reluctant to contact the manufacturer, offer to do so yourself.
You might also be able to purchase enough of the material to make, or have someone make, your own dress. Again, you’ll have to contact the manufacturer to get material from the same dye lot as the bridesmaids. This might be trickier, but it’s not unheard of.
Other Cheap Flower Girl Dress Options
Speak to the bride and let her know you need a cheap flower girl dress. If it’s important her bridal party have a specific look, regardless of the cost, she might offer to help out.
If it’s not so important to have a flower girl dress that’s a carbon copy of the bridesmaids’ dresses, you have other options. Ask the bride for a swatch of color from one of the bridal party dresses and search for a dressy dress in a color and material closely resembling the swatch. If it’s one of the season’s more popular colors, you’ll have plenty of options.
To find a cheap flower girl dress, search a department store’s sales items, secondhand or consignment stores or even lower scale stores such as Kmart or Wal-Mart. Each of these stores sell lovely dressy dresses, you’re sure to find one in a suitable style. Bridal shops and formalwear salons also have items on clearance, ask to see their cheap flower girl dresses.
Make Your Own
If you or someone you know can work a sewing machine, you might consider making your own dress. In fact, the manufacturer might even have a pattern available. The bride can also browse the various pattern makers to choose the dress she feels best works for the occasion. If material can’t be purchased from the manufacturer, you’ll no doubt be able to find a suitable match at the local sewing or craft store.
