The time of a couple’s engagement is a very special period in their relationship as they prepare for their impending nuptials. At the same time, however, it can be a hectic and frustrating period as they work toward the altar amid a flurry of planning details, family compromises, and unexpected problems. Understanding the importance of the engagement period can help couples take the time to enjoy this romantic and unique period together.
Steps of the Wedding Engagement
The wedding engagement period is the time between the two most important questions in the couple’s relationship: the engagement proposal and the affirmation of the wedding vows. During this time – which may stretch from just a few weeks to several years – there are many things that must be accomplished, including:
- Announcing the engagement to family members and friends as well as printing public announcements if desired
- Taking engagement pictures to use with wedding stationary or as mementos
- Celebrating the engagement and upcoming marriage with an engagement party, bridal showers, and bachelor parties
- Planning the wedding in every detail, from the dress and tuxedo to the flowers, location, menu, cake, music, colors, honeymoon, and more
- Planning for a life together by discussing important marital issues, taking marriage counseling courses, or otherwise adjusting to the partnership
- Taking care of the technical and legal details of the engagement, including obtaining a marriage license, blood tests (if necessary), name change forms, and other arrangements
Despite the fact that couples have much to arrange during their wedding engagement, they should not forget the happily ever after that awaits down the aisle, and celebrating their love and commitment every day before and after their wedding will help them cherish their relationship for years to come.
