Caribbean Beach Weddings

From LoveToKnow Weddings

Caribbean beach weddings are one of the hottest trends in destination weddings, but before jetting off to a tropical paradise to exchange I do’s, couples should understand both the benefits and the limitations of these island venues.

Why the Caribbean?

Many couples interested in beach weddings wonder why they should venture as far as the Caribbean – there are many attractive beaches in the United States, after all. Many mainland beaches, however, are not as well kept as those in the Caribbean, which often serve as primary tourist attractions. The milder year-round climate of the Caribbean is more suitable for weddings in all seasons (a Maine beach wedding wouldn’t be much fun in December, now would it), and many Caribbean nations recognize the appeal of destination weddings and offer coordinated packages to entice soon-to-be newlywed couples to their shores. Some all-inclusive resorts even offer free wedding packages when the happy couple books their honeymoon at the resort, giving the event the convenience of being both a wedding and a honeymoon in one location. This is also a great option for vow renewals or second weddings.

Ultimately, however, the biggest appeal of Caribbean beach weddings is the inherent romance and luxury of the tropical location, with waves caressing the sand and a gentle warm breeze lulling pre-ceremony jitters. The vibrant colors of turquoise water, rainbow bursts of tropical blooms, and vivid blue skies make the perfect backdrop for a true fantasy wedding.

Considerations for Caribbean Beach Weddings

Despite the visual appeal of a tropical destination and the convenience of many wedding packages, couples should understand the realities of tying the knot in the Caribbean before they head off to tropical shores.

Attire

A beach wedding demands specialized attire for the greatest comfort. A heavy satin gown with multiple crinolines will be stifling and unwieldy on a sandy beach, for example. Beach wedding dresses are usually shorter (so they don’t drag through the sand and surf), and are typically made from lighter, more breathable materials. The groom, on the other hand, may forsake a tuxedo jacket for a more casual shirt, and the bridal party may find themselves barefoot in the sand for easier walking as well as comfort.

Weather

Many people assume that the temperatures in the tropical Caribbean will be stifling, but in fact the warm ocean waters moderate much of the region’s climate. All the same, it may be too warm to be comfortable for many guests, and sufficient ice water or non-alcoholic drinks, fans (the wedding program can even be printed as a fan), sunscreen, bug spray, and adequate shaded areas for both the ceremony and the reception are critical for the comfort of everyone attending. Scheduling the festivities for the early morning or dusk is another prudent step to avoid the worst of the scorching sun.

One major weather concern that brides and grooms must be aware of is hurricane season, which runs annually from June 1 through November 30. While the most popular Caribbean beaches are out of the regular paths of major storms, it is wise to consider wedding insurance in case Mother Nature has other plans for your special day. Similarly, couples should always investigate alternative wedding arrangements in case of inclement weather.

Themes

For many couples, the simple luxury of a Caribbean beach wedding is enough of a theme – the tropical elegance is both romantic and exotic. At the same time, however, simple variations can make even these destination weddings more unique and memorable. Couples can embrace an aquatic theme with seashells, dolphins, or other marine life accents, or they can adopt local customs and crate truly unique events that honor not only the couple, but also the location. Other popular themes for Caribbean beach celebrations include luaus or seasonal variations.

Legal Requirements

Even a gorgeous location and meticulously planned event can be disastrous if the couple has not investigated the appropriate legal requirements for their marriage. There are dozens of nations in the Caribbean, each with slightly different legal requirements. Couples should investigate:

  • Waiting periods, which may be necessary before the couple can even obtain a marriage license.
  • Residency requirements, which can often be waived for weddings.
  • License fees, generally ranging from $50-300 depending on the type of ceremony and the location.
  • Blood test or health screening requirements.
  • Different regulations for civil or religious ceremonies.

Couples should also be familiar with passport regulations. Travelers are required to present valid passports when flying to Caribbean destinations, and in 2009 valid passports will be required for cruise travelers as well. It can take eight weeks or longer to obtain a passport, a fact the bride and groom should share with their bridal party and guests so everyone can be adequately prepared.

Popular Caribbean Beach Wedding Destinations

Nearly all the islands of the Caribbean offer a range of beautiful beaches for exotic weddings. The most popular destinations include:

  • The Bahamas: More than 700 islands await eager couples who want to tie the knot.
  • Jamaica: Mountains, waterfalls, and lush jungles are all available in this diverse paradise.
  • U.S. Virgin Islands: This eastern destination is often less crowded.
  • Cancun: White beaches and Mexican flair make any celebration a fiesta.
  • Aruba: Superior tourist service makes this southern Caribbean island exceptionally attractive.
  • Cayman Islands: This nation’s low crime rate and elite luxury is very appealing to couples.

Couples who want a Caribbean wedding but are nervous about the beach have many other options for these tropical destinations. Cruise ships, botanical gardens, cliff tops, cascading waterfalls, quaint churches, elegant estate manors, and lush jungle groves are all vibrant alternatives that offer Caribbean flair without mandating a beach wedding.

Caribbean beach weddings are popular options for couples interested in a tropical destination. By understanding the special needs of a Caribbean wedding and where to find the most popular options, couples can choose the perfect stretch of sand to begin their happily ever after.
