Cake Themes for Groom
From LoveToKnow Weddings
There are many different cake themes for groom cakes that can be used depending on the personality of the groom and the theme of the wedding.
The Groom's Cake Tradition
Many people didn't know about the groom's cake until they saw the movie Steel Magnolias, in which a red velvet groom's cake in the shape of an armadillo has a supporting role. The fact is, however, that the tradition of the groom's cake has been around for a long time, particularly in the southern United States.
Even if you didn't grow up somewhere with a tradition of having a groom's cake, it's a fun way to bring a little of your groom's personality into the big day (and another sweet is always a good thing).
Groom's cakes are traditionally chocolate, but as with many other things in weddings today, it's fine to break with tradition and have the groom's cake be any flavor you like. It doesn't even have to be a cake; you could have cupcakes, cookies, little pies or even chocolate-covered strawberries instead. And the cake can be served at the rehearsal dinner or at the wedding itself, at the same time as the bride's cake or later in the party.
Cake Themes for Groom Ideas
If you've decided that you want to have a groom's cake, you know that you have a lot more creativity and flexibility in what that cake is going to look and taste like than you might have with the main wedding cake.
It's a good idea to brainstorm some cake themes for groom ideas before you visit the bakery that's going to make the cake.
A good place to start is with some of the groom's favorite things. The groom's cake is a great place to bring some personality and whimsy into the day. The couple alone, or with parents, other family and friends, should brainstorm things such as:
- Favorite sports teams
- Hobbies
- Favorite colors
- Favorite books, television shows or movies
- The groom's jobs and passions
- Pets
- Ethnic heritage or important things from growing up
- Favorite vacation spots or dream travel destinations
- Other things the groom loves, such as his car, computer or cell phone
It's OK if some of these ideas are pretty crazy; in fact, it's a lot more fun if you come up with some really wild ideas. And it doesn't have to be all about the groom. Your ideas could also include things about how and where the happy couple met, something you enjoy doing together, or even something to do with where you are going on your honeymoon.
The point is that the sky's the limit when coming up with cake theme ideas for groom cakes. Once you have a huge list of ideas, you can pick out the two or three that are most interesting to you.
Deciding on a Design
While it's not actually necessary for the groom's cake to have anything to do with the bride's cake or the rest of the wedding as a whole, some brides and grooms like for everything at their wedding to be thematically on point. If you're one of those couples, some of your brainstorming ideas will clearly not work. For example, if the wedding aims to transport guests to Paris, a groom's cake in the shape of hubby's pontoon boat might not be the best option.
Other ideas might just not be workable in cake, though you'd be surprised what a good, professional cake designer can do. Of course, one of these fantasy cakes might be out of your price range, so going with a simpler design for the groom's cake might be a good idea.
Whittle your list down to three or four ideas that really excite you, then have a talk with your baker. If you're still in the process of selecting someone to handle your sweets, bring up your groom's cake ideas during the interviews. If the person you're talking to is as excited about your idea as you are, that will make a good match.
Alternatively, brides, family members, or someone in the wedding party may choose to create the groom's cake. With a bit of colored frosting and some fun cake toppers, it's possible to create a unique and memorable groom's cake that has a favorite hobby or pastime as its theme.
Coming up with a great theme for the grooms' cake may take a bit of brainstorming, but the end result is worthwhile. Whether it's a funny cake to highlight his humorous side, a sports cake to showcase his active spirit, or sentimental theme from the night the happy couple met, a cake with the groom in mind is sure to make the groom to be feel special and bring a smile.
