From LoveToKnow Weddings

Butterfly wedding themes are wistful and romantic, and butterfly wedding favors convey that romance to the guests, giving them a small piece of the couple’s optimism to share.

Types of Butterflies

Butterflies have a great deal of symbolism that appeals to many couples. A rather ungainly and innocent caterpillar wraps itself in a cocoon, much like an engaged couple wraps themselves in the flurry of wedding planning. What emerges is a graceful, delicate, and beautiful butterfly, spreading its wings and venturing forth with excitement and delight, just as the newlywed couple will spread their wings and begin their beautiful new life together.

Some couples opt to use real butterflies as inspiration for their butterfly wedding favors, particularly if one species of butterfly is meaningful to their relationship. A more popular option, however, is to create a butterfly-inspired design that coordinates with the wedding colors more closely than a realistic species might.

Couples can vary wing shapes and proportions on a butterfly to create their favors – heart-shaped wings with practically nonexistent bodies are a popular choice. A more elegant butterfly may have tapered rather than rounded wings. The inner “eyes” of the butterfly’s wing may be hearts, ovals, circles, or even the couple’s initials for uniqueness and personalization.

The colors of the butterfly’s wings are frequently personalized. A white or otherwise neutral base is a safe option, accented with hues that match the bridal party dresses, the wedding bouquet, or the season of the wedding. Ice blue and crystalline white are great choices for winter wedding favors, for example, while a fall wedding may use rich orange, auburn, and deep browns. By personalizing the shapes and colors of the butterfly, the couple can create a uniquely beautiful favor to share with their guests.

Ideas for Butterfly Wedding Favors

There are many different ways to incorporate a butterfly theme into wedding favors. Popular choices include:

  • Chocolates with sugary butterflies perched on top.
  • Gauze or crystal ornamental butterflies perhaps placed on individual flowers for each guest.
"Something blue" glass butterfly.
  • Butterfly clipart as part of a note card with flower seeds as a wedding favor.
  • Butterfly-shaped wedding favor charms with coordinating ribbons.
  • Butterflies as part of the artwork on chocolate wrappers, CD wedding favor covers, bookmarks, candles (especially if they are floral scented), or glassware.
  • Butterfly-shaped individual chocolate suckers, perhaps with different types of chocolate (milk, dark, and white) for accents.
  • Decorated butterfly flap closures on individual wedding favor boxes of almonds, candies, or other small items.
  • Delicate butterfly jewelry as a favor for female guests, bridesmaid gifts, or flower girl gifts.
  • Wedding napkins or other linens folded in stylized butterfly shapes as a decorative accent at the wedding reception.
  • Origami butterflies as a unique alternative to cranes or other familiar paper art shapes.

There are no limits to the type of butterfly wedding favors a couple can take flight with on their special day.

Incorporating a Butterfly Theme

A wedding favor will be more meaningful and significant if it blends with an overall wedding theme. Most couples assume that a theme must be bold and blatant, but butterfly favors can be a delicate accent to many different themes. In fact, butterfly favors can accentuate any wedding reception centerpiece for a quaint touch, or they may be part of an overall butterfly theme, a jungle or tropical motif, or a wildlife conservation decorative scheme. Because a butterfly is a small and relatively unobtrusive accent, they can easily fit into most wedding decors to add a small touch of delicacy and innocence without overpowering the wedding.

Butterfly Alternatives

Some couples may enjoy the delicate wings and fluttery nature of the butterfly but not want to use butterfly wedding favors because they are becoming more common. Unique wedding favor alternatives include:

  • Dragonflies in delicate colors with translucent wings.
  • Fairies for a magical and whimsical touch.
  • Hummingbirds or other small, beautiful birds.
  • Small guardian angels or cherubs with wings reminiscent of butterflies.

Any of these alternatives can be personalized just as much as butterfly wedding favors and will add even more individuality to the wedding.

Butterfly wedding favors can range from full-scale butterfly figures to delicate, tiny accents to other wedding décor. These beautiful and flirty creatures are a great way to add romance to a wedding theme in a creative, unexpected way.

Colleen -- I'm sorry, that is a stock photograph and we do not have any additional information about it. There may be a way to make a handmade one, however, or use starch on butterfly lace to create one with a similar design.
