Did you (or do you plan to) “smash” cake into one another’s faces after cutting your first slice? I know a lot of people consider this a cute wedding tradition, but I think it’s completely inappropriate for a day as solemn and formal as a wedding, even though the reception is naturally more relaxed and lighthearted. The symbolism of that first bite of cake for the couple is about supporting one another and being there to nurture and nourish one another, so what does it say when you do something so juvenile? Furthermore, cake smashing is messy, and it’s way too easy to get crumbs and icing on your dress or all through your makeup if you do this type of thing. I certainly wouldn’t want to be messed up like that! What are your thoughts? |

I totally agree with you about smashing the cake into each other’s face! While I think receptions are definitely a time to let loose and have fun, and not necessarily be as formal as the ceremony, I agree with the idea that smashing cake is pretty juvenile. I much prefer the hooked arms, where you feed one another a bite, as the photographic moment during cake-cutting. At my wedding, I told my hubby we weren’t going to do the cake smash, it was something I was not compromising on. While he probably would have been okay with it, I would have flipped and gone a bit bridezilla, to be perfectly honest (in private, hopefully, but who knows). The hair, makeup and dress all cost way to much to risk ruining! Plus, who wants to feel cake/frosting in their hair and on their face and down their dress for the rest of the evening? I know others thinks it’s great to do the cake smash, and that’s fine for them—but it definitely isn’t for me! [ Edited: 05 November 2009 10:23 PM by Amy Hoover]
