Was / Is your wedding cake just one flavor, or did you choose different flavors for different tiers? I know some couples have had several unique flavor options, like choosing a classic flavor for the largest tier (since most guests will like it and it will serve the most), while having the bride and groom each pick their favorites for other tiers. Personally, though, I prefer just one flavor - that way, no one wonders why they didn’t get a particular flavor for their slice, and you don’t have to worry about running out of one flavor but having too much of another left over. Of course, I can totally see having different flavors to accommodate different tastes and dietary needs, though, so it does depend on your guests’ preferences and requirements. Why did you choose the flavor or flavors you did, and did you have trouble with multiple flavors? |

We did plain old chocolate and white because everyone likes them. I was in a wedding, however, where the couple had 6 or 8 different flavors. It was really awesome of them to provide their guests with so many choices but there was a huge problem. The baker/decorator did not leave any notes saying which tier was which flavor, so the people cutting the cake couldn’t help guests choose amongst the flavors. They also didn’t cut pieces from each cake—they just went with two at a time, until they were gone, then cut into another. Although, we did get to eat the leftovers at the morning brunch the couple hosted, which was nice! So if you do get multiple flavors, make sure you leave a note explaining which flavor is on which tier, and that all the flavors should be offered to guests at the same time. |

That’s a great tip, Amy - I’m sure the guests would want to choose what flavor they’d like to sample, and it’s vital to know which is which! One way to solve that would be for the couple to do their ceremonial first cut (and all the photos with it), then for the cake to be wheeled back into the kitchen and completely cut up. Then the slices could be arrayed on appropriate labeled trays and set out buffet-style for guests to choose. That way, too, while there’d be a delay between that first cut and when the guests have their cake, they’d all get it closer to the same time as opposed to waiting for 100+ guests to be served. |
